“Food for health – food for all”
You’ve no doubt seen or at least heard of Food Network Canada, but what you may not realize is there’s a Food
Network right here in your own region – York Region Food Network (YRFN). But it’s not about celebrity chefs and extravagant cake challenges for this Food Network.
York Region Food Network promotes food security for a healthy, accessible and sustainable food system in York Region. To promote this vision, YRFN raises public awareness on the issues that surround food security, like affordable housing, adequate employment, and social assistance.
Through its various programs, YRFN aims to increase access to affordable and nutritious food that’s produced within a sustainable food system.
One program that York Region Food Network offers, and one that United Way of York Region (UWYR) supports, is the Good Food Box – a program that provides a fresh and nutritious box of affordable fruits and vegetables.
Members of the public place their orders with YRFN on or before the fifth of the month. The contents vary depending on what’s in season. On the third Thursday of the month, customers can pick up their order at the YRFN office, which is located on Penrose Street in Newmarket. Programs such as the Good Food Box are providing healthy food selections and educating the public about good food choices.
A small box is $10 and a large box is $15, saving you an average of a third to a half of the cost of purchasing similar produce at a regular grocery store. Not only do you save, but you get fresh fruits and vegetables and you’re supporting local farmers.
